Five Suspense Series You Must Read

So, initially I was going to title this with something to do with quarantine and then I realized that's crazy because these books should be read any time... but the sooner the better because they're AMAZING!

Having just finished reading Kings Falling by Ronie Kendig I realized I needed to share the five suspense series I think are a must-read!

First, let's start with Ronie since hers is the most recent book I read. I read it as an ebook and the first book in paperback. Both books had me on the edge of my seat. The second book I read in a few days, and holy smokes I wanted to cover my eyes, but then I wouldn't have been able to read the book. HA!

The series is The Book of the Wars. Book 1 is Storm Rising and book 2 is Kings Falling. Soul Raging doesn't come out until November... NOVEMBER, people!

Storm Rising:

Mentioned in the pages of the Septuagint but lost to history, the Book of the Wars has resurfaced, and its pages hold secrets--and dangers--never before seen on earth.

Tasked with capturing the ancient text, former Navy SEAL Leif Metcalfe is finally given command of his own team. But their best efforts are ruined when a notorious Bulgarian operative known as "Viorica" snatches the volume right out from under them.

Iskra "Viorica" Todorova is determined to use the book to secure the thing that matters most--freedom. But a series of strange storms erupts around the globe and the coming dangers foretold in the text threaten crops, lives--entire nations. Though both are haunted by secrets of the past and neither trusts the other, Leif and Iskra must form an uneasy alliance to thwart impending disaster. However, the truth hidden in two-
thousand-year-old words could unleash the storm of their own destruction.

Kings Falling:

Leif Metcalfe and his team, dubbed Reaper, need to recover the stolen, ancient Book of the Wars if they hope to stop the Armageddon Coalition and their pursuit of global economic control. But their attention has been diverted by a prophecy in the book that foretells of formidable guardians who will decimate the enemies of ArC. While Iskra Todorova uses her connections in the covert underworld to hunt down the Book of the Wars, Leif and Reaper attempt to neutralize these agents but quickly find themselves outmaneuvered and outgunned.

The more Reaper tries to stop the guardians, the more failure becomes a familiar, antagonistic foe. Friendships are fractured, and the team battles to hold it together long enough to defeat ArC. But as this millennia-old conspiracy creeps closer and closer to home, the implications could tear Leif and the team apart.

Soul Raging (not out yet):

Sometimes, the only hope is the enemy.

Leif Metcalfe is done waiting for answers and seizes control, a move that comes with a high price and a deadly risk: teaming up with the enemy. He can only hope that what he uncovers will heal the wounds he's inflicted on those he loves.

Iskra Todorova believes Leif is on a collision course with death and knows firsthand the irrevocable cost of that path to the soul. While trying to protect her daughter and intervene with Leif, Iskra is forced to set her sights on the man behind the evil organization ArC--Ciro Veratti.

Torn apart by injuries and opposing views on how to handle Leif's act of treachery, team Reaper hunts one of their own. The only thing they agree on is not stopping but starting the final battle prophesied in the Book of the Wars.

The next series that's a must read is Nancy Mehl's Kaely Quinn Profiler. Once again this series is a nail biter. If I remember correctly I finished book 3 in one day! I'm not sure if I had an nails left after I finished reading. lol Trying to figure out who the copycat killer was made me crazy!

Mind Games:

Kaely Quinn's talents as an FBI behavior analyst are impossible to ignore, no matter how unorthodox her methods. But when a reporter outs her as the daughter of an infamous serial killer, she's demoted to field agent and transferred to St. Louis.

When the same reporter who ruined her career claims to have received an anonymous poem predicting a string of murders, ending with Kaely's, the reporter's ulterior motives bring his claim into question. But when a body is found that fits the poem's predictions, the threat is undeniable, and the FBI sends Special Agent Noah Hunter to St. Louis.

Initially resentful of the assignment, Noah is surprised at how quickly his respect for Kaely grows, despite her oddities. But with a brazen serial killer who breaks all the normal patterns on the loose, Noah and Kaely are tested to their limits to catch the murderer before anyone else--including Kaely herself--is killed.

Fire Storm:

When FBI profiler Kaely Quinn's mother is diagnosed with cancer, Kaely takes time off work to go to Dark Water, Nebraska, to help her brother care for their mother. Upon her arrival, she learns of a series of fires in the small town, attributed by the fire chief to misuse of space heaters in the frigid winter. But Kaely is skeptical, and a search for a pattern in the locations of the fires bolsters her suspicions.

After yet another blaze devastates a local family, Kaely is certain a serial arsonist is on the loose. Calling upon her partner from St. Louis, Noah Hunter, and her brother's firefighter neighbor who backs Kaely's suspicions, Kaely and her team begin an investigation that swiftly leads them down a twisted path. When the truth is finally revealed, Kaely finds herself confronting a madman who is determined his last heinous act will be her death.

Dead End:

When a body is discovered in a field in Iowa, the police uncover fourteen additional corpses ranging from 20 years old to recent. The remains point to a serial killer with an MO the authorities have seen before--Ed Oliphant, a man who has been in prison for over 20 years . . . and is Special Agent Kaely Quinn's father. After several failed interview attempts to discover if Ed has been training someone to be a copycat killer, the police turn to Kaely in St. Louis.

Kaely promised herself she would never step foot in her hometown or set eyes on her father again. She's always refused to confront her past, but if she wants to prevent any more deaths, she must come face-to-face with the man she's hated for years.
As more bodies are discovered, Kaely races against time and her own personal turmoil to uncover the killer. Will this most personal case yet cost Kaely her identity and perhaps even her life?

Someone I have been fan-womaning over since reading book one is Natalie Walters. She's a newish published author. I've read all 3 books in her Harbored Secrets series. One of the things I loved about this whole series is getting to know the people of Walton, Georgia. Each of these books is a nail biter, but one thing that makes this series stand out is the humor. The conversations the characters have

Living Lies:

In the little town of Walton, Georgia, everybody knows your name--but no one knows your secret. At least that's what Lane Kent is counting on when she returns to her hometown with her five-year-old son. Dangerously depressed after the death of her husband, Lane is looking for hope. What she finds instead is a dead body.

Lane must work with Walton's newest deputy, Charlie Lynch, to uncover the truth behind the murder. But when that truth hits too close to home, she'll have to decide if saving the life of another is worth the cost of revealing her darkest secret.

Debut novelist Natalie Walters pulls you to the edge of your seat on the first page and keeps you there until the last in this riveting story that will have you believing no one is defined by their past.

Deadly Deceit:

Independent and tenacious journalist Vivian DeMarco is back in Walton, Georgia, for one reason--to do her job and get out. When her boss suddenly dies under suspicious circumstances, Vivian's only hope for finding the truth--and the next big story--is small-town law enforcement's lanky poster boy, Deputy Ryan Frost. But the deeper they dig, the more twisted the truth becomes, and Vivian finds herself fighting for not only answers but also her life. False leads, incriminating emails, and someone called The Watcher force Vivian to confront the secret of her past and decide: How much is she willing to risk for the sake of a headline?

Author Natalie Walters welcomes you back to Walton, Georgia, where everyone knows your name--but no one knows your secret.

Silent Shadows:

Pecca Gallegos moved to the tiny town of Walton, Georgia, to protect her son and escape the dangerous lifestyle that once defined her. When a series of strange circumstances evolve into threats, Pecca finds herself confiding in an unlikely ally--her stubborn patient.

Army veteran Colton Crawford is desperate to recover from the undiagnosed disorder that is ruining his life, and his instincts are on high alert when threats against his nurse and her son force him to take action. But Colton's involvement only ramps up the danger when he uncovers a family secret revealing that whoever is after Pecca is closer--and more deadly--than they realized.

With this suspenseful new story, Natalie Walters welcomes you once more to Walton, Georgia, where everyone knows your name--but no one knows your secret.

The Danger Never Sleeps series by Lynette Eason is a new one. Book 1, Collateral Damage is the only one out and book 2 comes out in August. Why does that seem so far away?! Once the ball starts rolling in the story, you can't stop it and you'll want to rush to the end! Twists and turns will keep you guessing!

Collateral Damage:

Honorably discharged from the Army after an explosion nearly killed her, former military psychiatrist Brooke Adams has set up shop to help others--but her days of helping military personnel are over. She's got her own battles to fight from her time overseas, and she's not equipped to take on more. Former Army Special Ops Sergeant First Class Asher James could handle anything that war sent his way--terrorists, bombs, bullets. The only thing that scares him now is sleep. As the shadows close in, the nightmares begin.

Finally convinced that he needs help, Asher makes an appointment with a counselor, and Brooke is pressed by her boss to take him on. When he arrives at her office she isn't there--but a dead body is. Brooke is devastated when she walks in, and Asher is a conveniently strong shoulder to cry on. But she can't take him on as a client after sharing such an intimate and unprofessional moment, can she? And he's not sure he can handle sharing his deepest fears with such a beautiful woman.

When it becomes clear that Brooke was the real target of the attack--and that her secrets go even deeper than his own--Asher vows to protect her no matter what.

Acceptable Risk (not out yet):

Sarah Denning is a military journalist with the Army in the Middle East when her convoy is attacked and she's taken hostage. When former Army Ranger Gavin Black is asked by his old unit commander--Sarah's imposing father--to plan an extremely risky rescue, he reluctantly agrees and successfully executes it.

Back in the US, Sarah is livid when she's discharged on a false psychiatric evaluation and vows to return to the Army. Until she learns of her brother's suicide. Unable to believe her brother would do such a thing, she puts her plans on hold and enlists Gavin to help her discover the truth. What they uncover may be the biggest story of Sarah's career--if she can survive long enough to write it.

Rachel Dylan knows how to make strong women characters for her suspense novels. I've read End Game, which is book 1 in her Capital Intrigue series. Book 2 doesn't come out until October! Why does it seem like fall is forever away when it comes to new releases? lol

End Game:

Each New Clue . . .
Every Crime Scene . . .
Brings Them Closer to Discovering the End Game

When elite members of the military are murdered on the streets of Washington, DC, FBI Special Agent Bailey Ryan and NCIS Special Agent Marco Agostini must work together to bring the perpetrator to justice. Unfortunately, all evidence points to a Navy SEAL sniper who Bailey refuses to believe is guilty.

When Bailey and Marco start to connect the dots between the victims, they wonder if there's a deeper cover-up at play. After Bailey is targeted, it becomes clear that someone is willing to kill to keep their dark secrets.

With the stakes getting higher by the moment, Bailey and Marco rush against the clock to determine whom they can really trust in this twisted conspiracy. As allies turn to enemies, the biggest secret yet to be uncovered could be the end of them all.

Backlash (not out yet):

CIA analyst Layla Karam is thrust into a dangerous DEA field operation against a cartel that puts a target on her back. Though Layla never wanted to be a field agent, Langley had other ideas. After one of her team members is murdered because of fallout from the op, Layla is left scrambling to find safety.

At the same time, the CIA opens up an internal investigation against her. Out of options, Layla turns to ex-boyfriend and private investigator Hunter McCoy for help finding out who might want to ruin her career.

Layla and Hunter soon discover a mole inside the DEA has sold out the team's identity to the cartel. She must clear her name with the Agency and protect herself and her teammates from cartel retaliation. With threats on all sides, Layla must put her trust in Hunter--the man who broke her heart--and hope they both come out of it alive.

Fiona It's Bedtime & Ansley's Big Bake Off Reviews

I just love being able to review books for kids! It gives me so much to look forward to when I have grandbabies! These are the kinds of books I want to have on my shelves for years to come. Thanks to Zonderkidz for allowing me to review both of these books.

Fiona It's Bedtime
Illustrated by: Richard Cowdrey
Publisher: Zonderkidz
ISBN: 9780310767558

Summary:

It’s time to go to bed and Fiona can’t fall asleep until she’s said “GOODNIGHT” to all her animal friends at the zoo.
Fiona, It’s Bedtime, a follow-up to the New York Times bestseller Fiona the Hippo and A Very Fiona Christmas, is the latest book to showcase the adorable internet sensation from the Cincinnati Zoo. Fiona is beloved by fans all over the world, and her newest book is the perfect bedtime read-aloud for cuddling with your little one. Fiona, It’s Bedtime, illustrated by New York Times bestselling artist Richard Cowdrey, features everyone’s favorite hippo who wanders through the zoo saying “GOODNIGHT” to all her animals friend before she heads to bed and settles into slumber.
With a cover that shines with spot UV and foil, this book is perfect for Fiona enthusiasts, fans of Sandra Boynton’s The Going to Bed Book, and any animal lover who’s ready for a read-aloud rhyming bedtime story.

My Review:

Once again I've fallen in love with Fiona the hippo. The story is absolutely precious and the illustrations are beautiful. Just like in my A Very Fiona Christmas book review, you can't help but think it's delightful.

I actually read the book on video for my sister-in-law's daycare on her Facebook page. It was fun to read this story having not even cracked the page to see it first!

The rhyme on each page will keep the children eager to hear how the animals fall asleep as a family. And honestly, the illustrator picked the cutest animals at the zoo. How can anyone, young or old, resist an otter family, an adorable giraffe, or a pile of meerkats? It's a fun way to walk through the zoo since we can't visit them right now. The other piece I like is that it pulls in the new koala family that we meet from the Christmas book. They're the first animals Fiona visits as they go to sleep.

I can't wait to have grandbabies one day because I'll be reading all of the Fiona stories to them!

Ansley's Big Bake Off
by Kaitlyn PittsCamryn PittsOlivia Pitts with Janel Rodriguez Ferrer
Publisher: Zonderkidz
ISBN: 9780310769606

Summary:

Ansley and her family move to a new city to seek a new start after the death of their mother. But that also means ... a new school, new friends, new everything! Fortunately, even though no one could ever take the place of their mom, Aunt Samantha has moved in to help Dad and all the girls.
As they all settle into their “new normal,” Lena finds comfort in singing and songwriting. Ashton and Amber record videos documenting their lives and email them to their grandmothers. And Ansley pursues her own dream of becoming an Olympic gymnastics champ when she signs up with Grace and Power Gym. But she soon realizes that using her creativity to bake treats and share them with those she loves brings her as much (or even more) joy—especially since it brings back memories of precious afternoons she spent in the kitchen with her mom.
So which dream should she follow? Ansley prays for guidance, and it seems her prayers are answered when she gets the opportunity to both perform as a gymnast and take part in a The Big Bake Off at the Roland Lake Founders Day Fair. The Grand Prize is a trophy and a spot on the local morning show, Awake with The Lake!
But her dreams of taking home the trophy and being on TV are threatened by her strongest competition: Taylor, a mean girl from her new school who not only teases Ansley and rejects her offers of friendship but comes from a family of professional bakers.
Still, with the loving and prayerful support of her own family behind her, Ansley knows she has a real shot at winning. But with Taylor in the mix, will Ansley be able to rise to the occasion? Or will she just get burned?
Ansley's Big Bake Off—an important addition to the Faithgirlz series:
  • Features diverse characters
  • Is an engaging read for girls ages 8–12
  • Is part of the Accelerated Reader (AR) program
  • Is a perfect birthday gift from parents and grandparents to tween girls, and is great for Spring Break and summer vacation reading

My Review:

This is the kind of book I wish I'd had available when my girls were in middle school. Positive stories for girls to read that have a faith base with its characters. It was very limited, or so it seemed, 15 yrs ago.

As a mom, I appreciate that there's a good, diverse group of characters in each of the books! Not only that, this story in particular shows how we're all different and have different dreams. On top of that, you don't have to stop with just one dream. You can be good at a variety of things.

Also, with this age group the book is targeting, I still like that there are some pictures of the characters scattered throughout the book. I think that's great for kids who are visual and like having a better idea of what the characters look like and what they might be doing in a particular scene.

As for the story itself, it was well written and in a way that teaches some very good lessons. One that is really important for young kids to learn is empathy. We don't always know what someone is going through and if someone's hurt, they sometimes hurt others. It was great reading Ansley's change towards Taylor as she gained more insight to her.

It's also important for kids, obviously girls who are mostly reading these books, to learn how to support each other and to cheer each other on. Chasing dreams isn't easy, but doing it with people who support you and love you makes all the difference in the world.

The Lost Lieutenant By Erica Vetsch & Giveaway

The Lost Lieutenant
by Erica Vetsch
Publisher: Kregel Publications
ISBN: 978-0825446177

This cover spoke to me. Is there any more reason to try a new author if the cover grabs you?! When I saw I Read With Audra share about this book tour, I jumped in feet first to be able to receive the book for review! PS the author lives in MN so that means she must be a good author. HA!

Summary:

Evan Eldridge never meant to be a war hero--he just wanted to fight Napoleon for the future of his country. And he certainly didn't think that saving the life of a peer would mean being made the Earl of Whitelock. But when the life you save is dear to the Prince Regent, things can change in a hurry.

Now Evan has a new title, a manor house in shambles, and a stranger for a bride, all thrust upon him by a grateful ruler. What he doesn't have are all his memories. Traumatized as a result of his wounds and bravery on the battlefield, Evan knows there's something he can't quite remember. It's important, dangerous--and if he doesn't recall it in time, will jeopardize not only his marriage but someone's very life.

Readers who enjoy Julie Klassen, Carolyn Miller, and Kristi Ann Hunter will love diving into this brand-new Regency series filled with suspense, aristocratic struggles, and a firm foundation of faith.

My Review:

Well, I have been in quite a reading slump recently. I haven't wanted to read. I'd been doing a bulk of my reading on my Kindle. Since my preference is paperback, I put the Kindle aside and HOPED The Lost Lieutenant would sling me out of my rut! Wow, it did it in spades!

How have I not read any of Erica's books before now? Where has she been all of my Regency reading life?

We meet Diana (who surprisingly isn't mentioned on the back cover) who has a wretched father and brother. How she turned out so pleasant is beyond me. I wanted to smack the living daylights out of both the men in her life. Yes, that's how good the writing is.

Then we're also introduced to Evan who is recovering from battle, but doesn't remember what happened on the field. Oh boy does the reader begin to feel for the guy. Things seem to go from bad to worse for him thanks to the Prince Regent's... generosity. hahaha

Since not much is given away about Diana's role in Evan, er the Earl of Whitelock's introduction to the ton in the summary, I don't want to say too much to give away some of the storyline. Simply put, she has a profound effect on his life and vice versa. And let's just say that's putting it mildly. Of course with Diana's history with the men in her family as well as other nasty ones, Evan shows her not all men are like the others.

I actually appreciated the supporting characters in this story, starting with the Prince Regent of all people! Beth (Diana's maid), Marcus (who helped Evan figure his new life out), and Shand (Evan's sergeant) all made quite the impression on me as a reader as well as the main characters.

The storyline flowed along and I have to admit, as I got towards the end I started reading faster because I had to figure out what in the world was going on. Something was up, but WHAT?! There was definitely mystery throughout the entire story and it pulled me along.

Now, my only "negative" that I can think of with the story is kind of an overall message to authors in general. I'm not sure if all readers are like me, but I'm not a fan of authors using names that I have no clue how to pronounce. lol Literally every time I saw that name "Cian" I thought to myself, "Am I saying this how the author was expecting"? I was saying it like "Ryan" or "Sean". I know it's an Irish name, but since I'm pretty positive most readers aren't familiar with it, I'm not the only one who was a bit thrown. lol Not a huge "negative", but still...

I'm already excited for July 28th when book 2 comes out! I can't wait to read Marcus' story.

Lost Down Deep By Sara Davison & Giveaway

Lost Down Deep Blog Tour
Welcome to the Blog Tour & Giveaway for Lost Down Deep by Sara Davison, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Lost Down Deep by Sara Davison Title: Lost Down Deep
Series: The Rose Tattoo Trilogy #1
Author: Sara Davison
Release Date: April 1, 2020
Genre: Romantic Suspense

She is the only one who can tell the police who attacked her in her home. If only she could remember…

Summer Velasquez is on the run from a man she has no recollection of after an attack she can’t recall. Every face in the crowd is a potential suspect, so how is Summer supposed to know who is a threat to her and who isn’t?

After fleeing her assailant and the parents who lied to her about what happened, she changes her name and seeks refuge in Elora, Ontario. The small town feels familiar, although she has no memory of ever having been here.

Even in what should be a safe place, she can’t shake the feeling that she is being watched.

When Ryan Taylor strolls into the Taste of Heaven Café where she works, Summer is immediately drawn to him. However, he may not be who he says he is either. As her suspicions grow, Summer prepares to run again.

But at least one person is determined to stop her. Permanently. And if she can’t remember who he is, this time he may succeed.

My Review:

This is my first time reading a novel by Sara Davison and my first Mosaic Press novel.

I'm not always eager to try new authors or new-to-me publishers, but they hit this one out of the ballpark and I'm glad I gave the book a try.

The story starts off with immediate action and while it calms down throughout most of the book, I feel like we, the reader, as well as the characters are always looking over our shoulder! One of the best parts of the story starts at the beginning because the author sets us up to not know who to trust. It certainly drew me in and hooked me right away.

Ana is a character I really appreciated. She is a strong character who can kick butt with the rest of them. She's also smart and kind. We're not sure what's going on in her life other than she was attacked, her parents aren't the warmest of people, and she's on the run from whoever attacked her.

Then there's Jude. Who the heck is he? Totally seems suspect right from the get go. He follows her and "meets" her as Ryan Taylor. I wanted to like him, but he makes it somewhat hard to.

Overall, the flow of this story was enjoyable with an underlying current of tension. A lot isn't answered until the end, which all of the pieces fall together to make the reader say, "Oh!" The supporting characters make me want to move to a small town and meet similar people. I also enjoyed the Spanish that was infused throughout the story. What makes it great for the reader is that the characters respond in such a way that you realize what the person was probably asking in Spanish (if you don't know the language)! That or the author explained it in such a way that gave a natural flow to the story.

I look forward to the next 2 books in the series!

Silent Shadows By Natalie Walters

Silent Shadows
by Natalie Walters
Publisher: Revell
ISBN: 9780800735340

Having read the first 2 books in the series I was excited to see that Revell was offering book 3 for review! I'm so glad they allowed me to be part of the reviewing team!

Summary:

They're running from their pasts into an unknown future.
But first, they'll have to survive the present.

Nurse Pecca Gallegos moved to the tiny town of Walton, Georgia, to protect her son and escape the dangerous lifestyle that once defined her. When a series of strange circumstances evolves into threats, Pecca finds herself confiding in an unlikely ally--her stubborn patient.

Army veteran Colton Crawford is desperate to recover from the disorder that is ruining his life, and his instincts are on high alert when threats against his nurse and her son force him to take action. But Colton's involvement only ramps up the danger when he uncovers a family secret revealing that whoever is after Pecca is closer--and more deadly--than they realized.

Welcome back to Walton, Georgia, where everyone knows your name--but no one knows your secret.

My Review:

Where do I even start with how fantastic Silent Shadows was?! I was so glad to go back to Walton, Georgia, but sad because I knew it was going to be the last book in the Harbored Secrets series.

While each of these books are suspense novels, the banter between the characters adds a levity to it that keep me turning the page! First there's Pecca... and her "introduction" to Colton. That is a scene NOT to be missed! Then throughout the rest of the story, the characters give each other a lot of grief. That's right up my alley!

"And that's my cue," Charlie, making a face, stood up. "I'm just going to do... man stuff." He hitched his thumb toward Colton and the kids. "Sweat, compete in feats of strength -- not talk about The Bachelor."

There is an underlying threat that the reader needs to figure out (along with the characters), but connecting the dots isn't easy in this one! When I finally figured something out, as in right before it was revealed, I was messaging the author saying something along the lines of..."oh my gosh is this really happening?" Poor Natalie! Don't you ever wish you could have a conversation with an author at certain points in a book? Yea, that was me... x2!

The writing was fantastic. I was gripped to the story from page one. There are actually twists and turns that will have you scratching your head trying to figure out what's going on and who's involved with what! As always I appreciate the thread of faith that's woven into the storyline. It's important for me to see the characters who have faith that might be teetering, to get a good grasp of who God is in their lives! This quote really hit me as I read it:

"She told me life is a series of choices. We should always strive to make the right ones, but sometimes we don't. She said that when we face hardships, whether by our own making or through circumstances beyond our control, that's when we have to turn everything over to God -- because only he has enough grace to turn our messes into blessings."

One of the aspects Natalie Walters addresses is C-PTSD. I had heard of the disorder, but didn't know the acronym. I'm thankful for the background she has as a military wife because it gives credibility to her writing and Colton's disorder. Also, Maceo, Pecca's son has a storyline that fits SO well with Colton. Just... everything really came together in Silent Shadows!

Don't miss out on this book and this series. You will fall in love with the little town of Walton, GA along with its inhabitants.
