Guardian By Cathy McCrumb

Guardian
by Cathy McCrumb
Publisher: Enclave Publishing
Series: Children of the Consortium
ISBN979-8886050943

Guardian is the third book in the Children of the Consortium series. While I haven't read any of the series yet, I'm working on getting all three of the books so I can read them all at once.

I did already buy book two, Aberration, because it was on sale. It's such a cool cover! NOW is the time to pre-order GUARDIAN, the third book in the series!

Summary:

The Recorder's fate has been sealed, but the Consortium is not the only enemy.

Labeled an aberration by the Consortium, the Recorder is not yet free. Time is running out as an engineered bioweapon wreaks havoc on friend and foe alike.

Stopping both the biological agent and the people who created it is no easy task, especially since the Recorder and her friends are trapped on a research station infested with behemoth insects. Without Consortium technology, the probability of neutralizing the threat falls to nothing. In order to save her allies, the Recorder must activate a drone, but her success might destroy any hope for freedom, a future, and a name.

Excerpt

“I was awful to you when we first met, and you took a bullet for me.”

“I’d do it again,” he replies, repeating what he’d said when he’d been bleeding out on
the floor.

“You make no sense.” I try to pull away, but Lance has a firm hold of my face, and when
I refocus my gaze on him, my heart begins to pound. The look is so intense, so focused that the
entire world melts away around us, leaving only him and me.

“I would do it again,” he repeats once more. “And you are worthy. One day, you will find
a man who treats you exactly as you should be treated. A man who honors God and cherishes
you as his wife. He will only ever touch you because he can’t stand the distance. Because not
touching you—” He brushes his thumb over my lips. “Is pure torment. Anyone would be lucky
to have you in their life, Eliza.”

Lance’s words steal my breath. The voice in my head is screaming at me to run—to put
some distance between us because what is happening is dangerous.

But for the first time, there’s another feeling. A warmth that envelopes me and silences
the doubts. That tells me everything I’ve gone through has led me to this moment. Right into
the arms of this man.

He leans down, and I close my eyes as he presses a kiss to my forehead. His lips are
warm, and I am desperate to feel them on mine. Then, he pulls away and leaves the room,
disappearing into his office.

Even as I know it’s a terrible idea to want him this way.
Even as I’d sworn off all relationships.

I still remain where I am, desire ablaze in my veins, wishing he would come back.

Guest Post

What about this time period do you enjoy so much that you want to write about it?

I guess you could say that a love for this time period is in my blood. I grew up in historic homes, the oldest predating the Revolutionary War. I scampered about the property in my handmade nightgown and mop cap, snuggled before fires in the stone fire place, and watched my father in his woodshop create period furniture. Not to mention a daily teatime and weekend jaunts to antique shops and museums. The result is a Jane Austen-loving, desperate romantic!

But it wasn’t only those parts of my childhood that lent to this desire. It was also the history of the time. The Regency setting is simply elegant. Print muslins of the dresses, Greek Revival and Empire styles, Wedgwood tableware—no plastic anything! Quill and ink, leatherbound books, calling hours, dances, long walks… The sights and sounds—so much about the time intrigues me.

While modernity has changed, the human condition has not. What would it be like to grapple with difficulties in the Regency context? And how does that context inform beliefs and choices? And how would the same hope we have in our Savior be in what we consider more challenging times and lifestyles? And, how can such grappling come alongside readers—not just a contrast of a historic/fictitious story world vs. the real-present—to reveal a consistent testimony of God’s work in our lives?

The Reunion

Book Excerpt

Simon leaned forward and braced his weight on the table. “This investigation of yours could get ugly and make the wrong people mad. You need to watch your back on this one, and with Ms. Langston by your side, hopefully, you’ll be able to keep a level head.”

Mason was already beginning to regret accepting the mentorship responsibility.

Simon lifted the phone receiver. “Please send in Ms. Langston.”

A few minutes later, a soft tap sounded on Simon’s doorframe. “Here’s Ms. Langston,” Ms. Carey, Simon’s administrative assistant, announced. The white-haired woman turned away without another word.

Simon waved her inside. “Layla, please come on in.”

She strolled into Simon’s office and reached across the desk to shake his hand. “It’s nice to see you again, Mr. Taylor.”

“Call me Simon. And this,” Simon gestured toward Mason, “is Mason Sterling. He’ll be
your mentor. I’ll leave it up to Mason to do what he does. He can help get you started.”

She turned to Mason with an outstretched hand and a smile as wide as Simon’s laptop
screen.

“I’m Layla Langston.”

Mason turned his attention to eager, expectant eyes. Soft, welcoming eyes. Eyes that he found hard to look away from. He swallowed his lack of enthusiasm, stood, accepted her hand, and squeezed, probably a little too hard. In his defense, the connection he felt upon contact caught him off guard, and instead of letting go, he tightened his grip. “Mason Sterling.”

“Nice to meet you.” Layla smiled and loosened her grip, an unspoken way to say, Let me go.

“And it’s nice to meet you, too. Come follow me so we can get you set up.”

He’d make an exception to his working alone rule this one time as long as Layla Langston didn’t get in his way. Although Simon needed a story and Layla needed to learn the ropes, Mason needed space to navigate his new life.

Five Star Books Of 2023

It's been a terrific reading year! I had a great many 5 star reads and I'm thrilled to share them all with you! Many of the books were for reviews, a good number weren't. I may have read more audiobooks this year than in previous years, but I don't have a good way to track that.

There are others that I read from previous years and I didn't blog about, but either left a review on Goodreads or gave it 5 stars, but forgot to review. Those will be at the end. Also, just a reminder, if you click any of the links, you'll be using my Amazon Associate link in which case, if you make a purchase, I'll make a few pennies! The first link with the title is to my review.

Here we go starting in January of 2023...

The Rose and the Thistle
by Laura Frantz

In 1715, Lady Blythe Hedley's father is declared an enemy of the British crown because of his Jacobite sympathies, forcing her to flee her home in northern England. Secreted to the tower of Wedderburn Castle in Scotland, Lady Blythe awaits who will ultimately be crowned king. But in a house with seven sons and numerous servants, her presence soon becomes known.

No sooner has Everard Hume lost his father, Lord Wedderburn, than Lady Hedley arrives with the clothes on her back and her mistress in tow. He has his own problems--a volatile brother with dangerous political leanings, an estate to manage, and a very young brother in need of comfort and direction in the wake of losing his father. It would be best for everyone if he could send this misfit heiress on her way as soon as possible.

Drawn into a whirlwind of intrigue, shifting alliances, and ambitions, Lady Blythe must be careful whom she trusts. Her fortune, her future, and her very life are at stake. Those who appear to be adversaries may turn out to be allies--and those who pretend friendship may be enemies.

Yesterday's Tides by Roseanna M. White

In two world wars, intelligence and counterintelligence, prejudice, and self-sacrifice collide across two generations

And when special agent Sterling Bertrand is washed ashore at Evie's inn, her life is turned upside down. While Sterling's injuries keep him inn-bound for weeks, making him even more anxious about the SS officer he's tracking, he becomes increasingly intrigued by Evie, who seems to be hiding secrets of her own.

Decades earlier, in 1914, Englishman Remington Culbreth arrives at the Ocracoke Inn for the summer, never expecting to fall in love with Louisa Adair, the innkeeper's daughter. But when war breaks out in Europe, their relationship is put in jeopardy and may not survive what lies ahead for them.

As the ripples from the Great War rock Evie and Sterling's lives in World War II, it seems yesterday's tides may sweep them all into danger again today.

When her mother, the Persian king’s famous senior scribe, is kidnapped, Jemmah and her sister must sneak undetected into enemy territory to rescue her. But infiltrating their adversary’s lands proves easier than escaping them. Asher is not who the world believes he is. Despite his royal blood, he has had to climb his way out of poverty to forge success from nothing. A manufacturer of some of the best weaponry in the East, Asher has only one goal: to destroy his father. But following his escape from prison, Asher is irresistibly drawn to Jemmah, unaware that she guards her own secret.

A Holly Jolly Christmas
By Brandy Bruce

Victor Avila needs a break from the hustle of restaurant life. It’s December, but there’s no chance of snow in the forecast. It’s past time for a change in scenery. So, when a few friends invite him to go skiing Colorado, for once Victor says yes. He figures that mountains, snow, and time away from work are just what he needs to recharge. Two workplace rivals. One festive competition. And a romance that upends it all.

Every December two things are guaranteed for graphic designer Mackenzie Graham--Christmas celebrations and the annual promotion at her workplace. Those two things are by no means mutually exclusive. In fact, the better an employee is at harnessing the Christmas spirit, the more likely they'll win the new job. With her social anxiety, Mackenzie never thought she'd be a contender in her company's holiday competition, so how exactly has she found herself dueling her workplace crush with wrapping paper tubes and using tinsel as her weapon of choice for a much-needed raise?

Jeremy Fletcher's life is meticulously planned out, including how to win this year's promotion at work. Not only will the new position fulfill some of his career goals, but as a single guardian to his twin niece and nephew, he needs the salary increase to support his family. Jeremy has barely noticed Mackenzie Graham around the office, but now that she's his rival, he can't stop thinking about her. Her quirkiness intrigues him, and he's afraid that if he can't get his head on straight, the promotion isn't the only thing he'll end up losing to Mackenzie.
