The Elusive Truth Of Lily Temple By Joanna Davidson Politano

The Elusive Truth of Lily Temple
by Joanna Davidson Politano
Publisher: Revell
ISBN: 9780800742973

For the record, if Joanna Davidson Politano writes a book, I'm reading it! No questions asked. I don't even need to know what the book is about. All I need to know is that she wrote it! I'm on her launch team and she sent me her book for review.

Summary:

In the search for the truth, the line between fact and fiction is beginning to fall out of focus

It is 1903, and Lily Temple is a beautiful silent-film actress who spins fairy tales and plays frivolous roles in front of the cine-camera. But beneath the costumes and stage makeup is a woman with a quick wit, a murky past, and a tantalizing secret.

Underground investigator to the wealthy, Peter Driscoll has been tasked with locating the legendary Briarwood Teardrop, an exquisite sapphire that has been missing for years--and which Lily happens to be wearing beneath her gown. In order to stay close to her and unravel the mystery, Peter employs the enchanting actress's help on a case.

But as they are investigating together, Peter is also investigating Lily. The closer he gets to the truth, the more danger they face. And the closer he gets to Lily, the clearer it becomes that he needs her even more than she needs him.

My Review:

As soon as I finished the first chapter I was enraptured by the story. WHAT was Lily going to say or do next?

We meet Lily Temple, an... actress. Yes, an actress. She has secrets, which are peeled back layer by layer thanks for Peter Driscoll. Plain Peter Driscoll or so Lily initially thinks. Lily is fascinating. She's also a mystery. Where did she come from? How is she connected to the missing gem? Peter intends to find out.

What he doesn't expect is for Lily to be so all-encompassing. He has no choice but to figure out who she is - who she REALLY is. What he doesn't realize is how dangerous that will become. To keep her close, he invites her to join him on some investigations where she can employ her acting skills. Meanwhile, he spends his time listening to her, chipping away at her resolve to stay distant to everyone.

I felt a bit like I was reading a story that should be a classic along the lines of Dickens. Yes, I said that! I became a cheerleader in heart for Lily and Peter, Roddy and his opinions be hanged! You get to know gruff Roddy through the story, and it's hard not to appreciate his protection of Peter. Peter is kind and thoughtful. His biggest skill is listening and he uses it to his advantage in so many ways. Lily, she's like a kaleidoscope.

There are a number of daring cases Peter takes Lily on, and Roddy is always present in one way or another with each one. With each case, Peter demonstrates to Lily how well he's getting to know her, which she likes and dislikes at the same time! Don't we all long to be truly known?

This story reads like a parable directing the reader to the One who truly knows and seeks after each of us. Peter can see the Savior availing Himself to Lily, pursuing her. It comes to light brighter and brighter as the story continues. I found it absolutely beautiful!

These Tangled Threads By Sarah Loudin Thomas

These Tangled Threads
by Sarah Loudin Thomas
Publisher: Bethany House
ISBN: 9780764242014

The publisher kindly surprised me with a copy of this story! I had been seeing and hearing about it on social media so I had hoped to read it at some point one day. Imagine how excited I was when the book showed up in the mail!

Summary:

Set in the shadow of Biltmore Estate, a poignant tale of friendship, restoration, and second chances.

Seven years ago, a hidden betrayal scattered three young friends living in the shadow of the great Vanderbilt mansion. Now, when Biltmore Industries master weaver Lorna Blankenship is commissioned to create an original design for Cornelia Vanderbilt's 1924 wedding, she panics knowing she doesn't have the creativity needed. But there's an elusive artisan in the Blue Ridge Mountains who could save her--if only she knew where to begin.

To track down the mysterious weaver, Lorna sees no other way than to seek out the relationships she abandoned in shame. As she pulls at each tangled thread from her past, Lorna is forced to confront the wounds and regrets of life long ago. She'll have to risk the job that shapes her identity, as well as the hope of friendship--and love--restored.

My Review:

First, can we just talk about how gorgeous the cover of These Tangled Threads is? It's totally the mood for this story!

What a "tangled" mess things can become when we twist ourselves up in lies and deception in moments of desperation! The weight of it can be overwhelming and affect the lives of those around us. Lorna finds this out the hard way. This is such a beautiful story of restoration, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

Dear Lorna has been through so much with the loss of her family and the possible loss of her job. Her relationship with friends and those under her leadership are torn apart because of decisions made in haste and panic.

Loyal Arthur has been through a lot as well as we learn in the prologue. He is a fine man who has his eye on Lorna, who just can't see past her deception. Arthur tries to break down her walls, but because he has no idea what's transpired in the past, doesn't have a clue how to do that. He struggles with his past abandonment and a family member who shows up unexpectedly!

Unique Gentry ends up at Biltmore industries after he grandfather dumps her with the women who run the trade school. Gentry is a headstrong young girl with zero desire for receiving direction. She comes under the tutelage of Lorna and to say that they clash would be an understatement.

These three characters ebb and flow together throughout the story. They're in and out of each others lives. The story also goes back and forth with all 3 of them as well as different timelines. It wasn't difficult at all to keep up with whose perspective it was.

When things begin to unravel, Lorna has no choice but to fix the wrongs she's done, somehow admit to those around her what she's done, and seek forgiveness if possible. Their journey to reconciliation isn't an easy one. They learn so much about themselves and each other as they struggle for the truth.

Author Interview

  1. How do you decide on your characters careers? Do you have to do a lot of research when it comes to their respective careers?

In Lovin’ On Red, I needed an entrepreneurial type because Peep’s expansion is part of the story line. It came fairly easy because in real life, I’m surrounded by business entrepreneurs. When I choose a career, I usually know someone who works in that specific industry. It’s my favorite way to research—talking to and interviewing people.

  1. Have any of your other characters been differently abled? How did you decide Rory would be missing a foot?

So far, Rory is the only character with a disability. My son, a veteran of the Afghanistan war, helped me write the short story-prequel to the first two books in the series. In story-form, the reader learns how Rory lost his foot. I needed the main character to have a serious, life-changing injury, but not so severe he couldn’t be mobile or achieve his dream of marriage and a passel of kids. The prequel is a free gift for anyone who signs up for my newsletter.  https://mailchi.mp/487725d3738c/free-giveaway

  1. Do the characters in your series cross over to other books in the series?

Yes! I created a story world about a nucleus of close friends with accompanying minor characters. Each book has different main characters and its own unique plot.

In the prequel, Rory and Jesse make the decision to become accountability partners about their dating lives. Following through to Book 1, Jesse falls head over heels for Brenna, his new accountant. Rory is present as his best friend and accountability partner, to help  guide him through the mine field of new feelings and emotions. Book 2 is Rory’s story and Jesse returns the favor. (Makes for hilarious conversations as Jesse and Rory are polar opposites in personality and temperament.)

  1. Do you ever find that your characters take you and the story in a direction you hadn't expected?

Yes, again! When I began to write Lovin’ On Red, I didn’t know there would be letters from Vi’s dad. But when Rory found her dad’s electronic device hidden in the couch, it was the perfect vehicle to give Vi much-needed closure and healing. And I had no idea how the ending would come together, but the characters were faithful to reveal what needed to happen, even if they were excruciatingly slow about it.

  1. Would you ever consider adding a pet of some sort to one of your stories because of your own dogs? Would they be an inspiration to you to add an animal?

I love and understand dogs, so they have a way of showing up in my stories. A little mama dachshund makes a brief appearance in Book 2. A writing mentor of mine has a gorgeous white lab, and he shows up in one of my books too.

  1. Do you see yourself writing more stories set in Texas?

I try my best to be true to whatever the Lord puts on my heart to write. So far, it’s all been about Texas. It’s what I know. And while I have friends who compete in rodeos and are uncomfortable in any footwear but boots, I tend to write outside of the stereotypes that people assume about Texas.

Home To Heritage By Susan May Warren & Tari Faris Cover Reveals

I'm thrilled to be participating with Sunrise Publishing to share the covers of the three covers of the upcoming Home to Heritage series by Susan May Warren and Tari Faris! I'm a tried and true fan of all things Susan May Warren. I've read a couple of Tari's books and really enjoyed them so I can't wait for this partnership.

You’re the Reason by Susan May Warren with Tari Faris

She never intended to return to Heritage.

When an injury sidelines her, Grace Howell leaves her life as a ballerina and returns to Heritage, Michigan, to heal. Teaching dance is just a temporary gig, until she finds herself unexpectedly charmed by small-town life and her growing attachment to Seth Warner, a man from her past with a troubled history of his own.

He’s back in Heritage as a changed man.

The last place Seth thought he’d return is Heritage, but a felony record has narrowed his options, compelling him back to a community that hasn’t forgotten his transgressions. Dreams of starting a Ninja Gym give him purpose, yet it’s his entanglement with Grace—the woman he once let slip away—that ignites his desire to stay. Is this his chance at redemption and to live out the love he’s always harbored?

But can they forget the past?

When Grace’s old ballet company offers her a chance to come back, she’s faced with a heart-wrenching decision: pursue the dream she’s always known or stay with the community and man that have captured her heart, even as that love is put to the test.

But has Seth really changed?

Seth’s world is rocked by a confrontation that threatens to pull him back into the world he’s tried so hard to escape. He must fight to clear his name and protect his future with Grace, proving that his commitment to change is more than just talk.

With their happiness hanging by a thread, the decisions they make will define their fates and the heart of Heritage itself.

Here With Me by Susan May Warren, Tari Faris, and Mandy Boerma

Love ignites in a last-chance hardware store, but will their hearts, like the failing family business, require a rescue?

She just wants a fresh start…

Inheriting her best friend’s daughter and a store on the brink of collapse, Sadie Hoover is determined to provide Lottie a stable life and keep the family business afloat. But her resolve is tested when the past walks in, wearing a tool belt and a smile that still weakens her knees.

Is he back to break her heart?

David Williams, once the love of Sadie’s life, returns to Heritage not as the missionary he was, but as a man in search of healing and purpose. Tasked with community service, he’s thrown into the daily grind of nuts and bolts, unaware that the hardware store’s troubles—and Sadie’s struggles—are more than just loose hinges and unpaid bills.

What will it cost her to fall for him again?

As they grapple with financial peril and the echoes of a love once lost, David and Sadie are forced to confront what they truly want. The store’s impending foreclosure looms over them, a testament to their joint past and the future they must shape.

If the store fails, they lose not just a legacy, but the second chance life has offered them. Can they rekindle their love while saving the heart of Heritage, or will their dreams rust away like forgotten tools?

Can love be rebuilt from the ruins of their shared history, or will the fight for survival drive the final wedge between them?

Christmas With You by Susan May Warren and Tari Faris

What do you get when you have an ex-navy seal, a Christmas tree farm, and first-time nanny? Find out in the third book of the Home to Heritage series, Christmas with You.

Fallon James has lost everything—her husband, her job, and her home. With nowhere else to turn, she returns to her hometown of Heritage, Michigan, only to find her family's once-thriving Christmas tree farm on the brink of ruin. Determined to save the farm, Fallon throws herself into the struggle, but she can't do it alone.

Enter Cole Scott, Fallon's high school friend and now a single dad working odd jobs to support his two kids. Cole agrees to help Fallon in exchange for her watching his children while he travels for a lucrative security job. As they work side by side, old tensions resurface, but so does an undeniable attraction. However, Fallon harbors a secret that could change everything.

Just as the farm starts to see success, Fallon's former company unleashes a devastating lawsuit, threatening to destroy everything she and Cole have built. With time running out and her dreams slipping away, Fallon must make a choice that could cost her the love and family she's always wanted. Worse, a shocking turn of events forces Cole to confront what truly matters most.

Can Fallon and Cole overcome the secrets, lies, and legal battles that stand between them? Or will they lose the farm, their love, and the future they've risked everything to build?

Author Guest Post

1.     How do you research topics that your series covers? What do you do to help yourself from being pulled into the utter sadness of human trafficking?

Excellent questions. As far as research, I have often referred to myself as a lazy writer, since spending hours reading article after article on the internet is not my favorite. However, I always try to do as much as I need to do to honor the topic and those who have personally experienced these circumstances and to produce a story that is real and authentic.

In the case of the two sparrows for a penny series and the way it delves into the world of sex trafficking, that meant more immersive research than I have ever done, since the precious women, children, and some men caught up in this evil deserve to have their story told in as honest and real a way as possible.

Of course, that kind of research did make it difficult to avoid being pulled into the utter sadness of what is happening to an alarming degree in the world today. In some respects, I didn’t try to avoid it. I have a friend who fostered numerous children. I once asked her how she kept from losing her heart to those kids when she knew she would have to give them up, and she told me that she didn’t. She freely gave them her full heart because they were worthy of that kind of love and didn’t deserve for it to be withheld, even though that would have been easier on her. That was on my mind as I researched this series. Victims of human trafficking deserve to be heard, for their stories to be told, even if the hearing is painful.

Having said that, the focus of the two books in this series that deal with trafficking—Every Star in the Sky and Every Flower of the Field—is not on that world but on the healing that is possible after being rescued from captivity. There is no wallowing in the muck and mire of the heinous practice. While enough details are given that readers understand what the girls go through, it is clear that neither girl is alone. That God is there with them, even in that unspeakable darkness. He knows and sees them, has never abandoned them, and brings them out of that life and into His healing light and grace.

The theme of every book I write—a theme that shines more prevalently in this series than in any other—is that, whatever we are going through, God is with us. We are never alone. He has promised to never leave us or forsake us, and He cannot break that promise and still be God.

Even in the midst of unimaginable circumstances, there is hope. And it is that hope that allows me to write these kinds of stories without being overcome by sadness. My prayer for every reader is that, as they read about the men and women in my stories and what they go through, what they survive, how faithful God is, that they will experience that same hope in their own lives and, in turn, share it with a world in such desperate need of it.

Author Interview

1. Did you know a lot about medicinal herbs before you started this story?

Actually, not as much as I should have considering that my husband knows everything about them and he tells me things all the time! I’m listening, I really am. I just don’t have the brain that he and Ruby do where I can remember what each one does and how to best use it. I’m getting there now that I’ve written the book (and of course continuing to pay attention when my husband talks about dandelion roots.)

2. Do you prefer to write historical or contemporary stories and why?

A few years ago, my answer would have been contemporary all the way. That’s where I started, and I still write contemporary and love it. So when my agent and editor at the time suggested that I try out a historical romance, my face tuned up. Good thing we were on the phone and they couldn’t see it. But then, I found the Packhorse librarians in history and of course they were right here in my neck of the mountains–just over into Kentucky from my home in NC, and Mattie and Ruby and Ava introduced themselves to me and well… I fell in love with historical fiction.

3. Have you ever traveled to where pack horse librarians used to deliver books? If so, what was that like?

I have! I’ve been out to Hyden, Hazard, and Dryhill, Kentucky a few times. I’ve driven along the Middle Fork River and stopped along The Hell For Certain Creek where my particular stories take place. It’s just beautiful there. And it’s so surreal in the best of ways to be right where those ladies were. I can imagine them splashing across the creek on their horses– rain, shine, or snow, taking those bound copies of wild imaginings and volumes of useful resources of all kinds to the people of their community at a time where they had less than nothing, but words and stories and information were still available! For this book I also researched the Frontier Nursing Service started by Mary Breckinridge in Hyden. It’s amazing that both of these fantastic services manned (no pun intended) by women were going on in this same area that most of the country didn’t even know existed. It’s fascinating.

4. How do you find time to write your stories while working as a teacher, being a mom, and a wife?

I’ll admit, the time I find is short so I have to make the most of it. It’s a mix of planning and being ready to write at the drop of a hat. My schedule changes with the seasons, with the grades the kids are in or activities they’re doing. While writing this book my two younger sons were taking a computer coding class that lasted about 2 hours each Monday. Just around the block from that class was a Barnes & Noble. I set aside that time as sacred writing time. I went to the cafe, did NOT stop to look at books, and sat and wrote for 2 hours. I didn’t call friends to join me for coffee, if the phone buzzed and it wasn’t my husband or the kids program, I didn’t answer it. I didn’t scroll Instagram… I used that 2 hours, because sometimes that was all I got in the whole week, and I wrote like crazy.

Otherwise, if a moment of downtime appeared, I sat down and started writing–even if it only lasted 20 minutes. I didn’t stop to make coffee, get my favorite shirt on, find a playlist or any of the other rituals we sometimes think we “need” to write. I just wrote.

5. The cover of this book is so bright and sunny! Do you have any part in choosing your covers?

One of the things I love about working with a smaller press such as Fireship/ Cortero is that yes, I do get a part in choosing the cover. My editor lets me see what they’re thinking about and asks for my input. We toss photos back and forth until we come up with a winner. And LOVE this cover!

6. How do you decide on the setting and time period for one of your stories?

Actually that was a gift in disguise to me. It was actually the idea of another editor with a different publisher to write about the Packhorse Librarians. I have to admit, at the time I hadn’t heard of them and they had been right here in the Appalachian Mountains no more than three hours from me. I ended up writing a draft of the book that just didn’t jive with what the other editor wanted (that happens) and she graciously released the draft to me and I went on to finish it and publish with Fireship. You never know what ideas are going to come to you and from where they will arrive. I am very thankful!
