How did Jae-won Lin, the third foster sister, elude capture that night? Why didn’t she call the police or Tag to let them know what happened? And where has she been for the last eight years? He loved Jae once, but he can’t let her back into his life until he has more information.

Unfortunately, time is running out. Someone powerful is coming after Jae, bent on revenge. If Tag can’t get to her before her mysterious pursuer, Jae could take the answers to all Tag’s questions to her grave.

Along with any hope the two of them might have to find their way to each other again.

1.     How do you research topics that your series covers? What do you do to help yourself from being pulled into the utter sadness of human trafficking?

Excellent questions. As far as research, I have often referred to myself as a lazy writer, since spending hours reading article after article on the internet is not my favorite. However, I always try to do as much as I need to do to honor the topic and those who have personally experienced these circumstances and to produce a story that is real and authentic.

In the case of the two sparrows for a penny series and the way it delves into the world of sex trafficking, that meant more immersive research than I have ever done, since the precious women, children, and some men caught up in this evil deserve to have their story told in as honest and real a way as possible.

Of course, that kind of research did make it difficult to avoid being pulled into the utter sadness of what is happening to an alarming degree in the world today. In some respects, I didn’t try to avoid it. I have a friend who fostered numerous children. I once asked her how she kept from losing her heart to those kids when she knew she would have to give them up, and she told me that she didn’t. She freely gave them her full heart because they were worthy of that kind of love and didn’t deserve for it to be withheld, even though that would have been easier on her. That was on my mind as I researched this series. Victims of human trafficking deserve to be heard, for their stories to be told, even if the hearing is painful.

Having said that, the focus of the two books in this series that deal with trafficking—Every Star in the Sky and Every Flower of the Field—is not on that world but on the healing that is possible after being rescued from captivity. There is no wallowing in the muck and mire of the heinous practice. While enough details are given that readers understand what the girls go through, it is clear that neither girl is alone. That God is there with them, even in that unspeakable darkness. He knows and sees them, has never abandoned them, and brings them out of that life and into His healing light and grace.

The theme of every book I write—a theme that shines more prevalently in this series than in any other—is that, whatever we are going through, God is with us. We are never alone. He has promised to never leave us or forsake us, and He cannot break that promise and still be God.

Even in the midst of unimaginable circumstances, there is hope. And it is that hope that allows me to write these kinds of stories without being overcome by sadness. My prayer for every reader is that, as they read about the men and women in my stories and what they go through, what they survive, how faithful God is, that they will experience that same hope in their own lives and, in turn, share it with a world in such desperate need of it.
