Fields of Grace by Kim Vogel Sawyer & GIVEAWAY
First I'd like to thank Jim at Bethany House Publisher for my review copy of Kim's book Fields of Grace.
I have been trying something new with the books I receive to review. I'm not reading what the book is about on the back cover. So far it's been an enjoyable adventure. I did this with Fields of Grace and wasn't disappointed!
I know very little about the Mennonite faith, but learned about the old faith, to a degree, that was brought over from Russia. It seems very similar to the Amish faith.
Reinhardt and Lillian Vogt are heading to America with their 3 boys and Reinhardt's adopted brother, Eli. They are leaving to protect Henrik from joining the war. The trip over is costly and lives are lost.
Eli and Lillian enter into an agreement to make sure their lives start off on the right foot here in this new land. They head to Kansas ready to start a new life and make what's left of their fractured lives work.
I found this story compelling. It's a historical novel, but a genre I haven't read before. I found the way Eli chose to honor Reinhardt and Lillian was a beautiful example of love. He also loves the boys, as much as he can without putting his heart too much on the line.
Lillian, for her part, makes the most of living in a sod house and living with her broken heart along with her oldest son's frustration. She is grieving her loss and trying to figure out what her new life holds for her and her boys.
How they manage to balance their lives the way they do is amazing to me. I never would've survived living in those times. The plains they live on with the weather elements they had to deal with is a vital part of this story. Lillian & Eli's future lives depend on the harvest that is to come.
To win this book, leave me any kind of comment. I'm not very "creative" today. :o) Leave your email address so that you can be contacted. Open to US residents only, 18 yrs old and older. Giveaway will end October 16, 10pm (CST).

Faith 'n Fiction Saturday ~ Christian Fiction--escapism?
My Answer
*SPOILER ALERT* One book that I thought didn't resolve the spiritual aspect of it's character is Stretch Marks by Kimberly Stuart. I just finished reading it and was surprisingly ok with no conversion. She didn't stop going to yoga, she never seemed to feel living with her boyfriend was wrong, etc. Her mother tried to share her faith (in her own crazy way), and you could tell that the comments made Mia think, but no conversion. But here's the funny part about this book, even though I'm ok with no conversion in this book, as soon as I closed the book, my first thought was, "Oh, there must be another book to highlight Mia's conversion!" Interesting, huh?
The Moment Between. It tackles mental illness and does a heavy job of it! Fallen by Matthew RaIey hits on the topic of pastoral infidelity! say kudos to those authors who take on difficult life situations that are real to you and me!
On the opposite side of the coin, I think it's important for Christian authors to write about relevant topics and true struggles that we all go through. Our problems are rarely solved as quickly as in a novel. But, I think it's vitally important for those same authors to remember the audience they're writing for. We have expectations of CF and that's why we read it instead of secular fiction. If we didn't like the elements in CF, we'd be reading the other stuff. There's a definite purpose to what the Christian authors and publishers do, and for that I am forever grateful!Saturday, October 10, 2009
The Mom Song by Go Fish
I heard this song on a Christian radio station that I don't listen to that often. We have a couple of Christian stations that I listen to a bit more than this one.
Now, as for Go Fish, I've been a fan of theirs since I lived in Washington over 11 yrs ago. They are an awesome acapella group. In fact I took my girls to one of their concerts a couple years ago. They are so amazing! They have a great kids CDs as well as one for adults. Their adult songs such as "Little Girl" are beautiful!
Well, when I heard this song, my first thought was, I have got to find this video on YouTube to share with everyone! Wish I'd have heard this song back in May when it was Mothers Day, but since I have 7 months before we come back around to that special holiday, I wanted to feature it now.
This song is in honor of all the moms out there!
