Book Excerpt
The male acrobat took his place on the swinging bar. He pushed it to go higher and faster, each swing causing Laura to catch her breath.
Then he clamped his legs on the bar upon securing wires and turned his body upside down.
The lady across the top of the tent swung in opposition. When had she taken to flight?
But now she, too, drove the momentum of her swing, drawing even closer to the man. At some point, she released her secure hold and, flipping through the air, reached for her partner.
There was a moment when everything was precarious. Would she make it? Would he catch her? Or would she fall to the net below? But just as she reached for him, he did so for her. And their hands secured a hold that kept her safe.
Laura unclenched her jaw once the woman reached safety, and loosened her grip—a grip that had, at some point, taken Jack’s hand. His warm fingers surrounded hers, offering her the same security as the trapeze artist offered his partner. But could she trust Jack? Would he, too, keep her from falling if she were to let go?
Though the real question was deeper than that. Could she trust God? So much about her situation was unpredictable and out of her control. But not out of His. He was more than capable of catching her, but not if she wouldn’t let go and trust Him. As long as she held tightly to the bar, she would never know what it was to fly. Or how much she could indeed rely on His faithfulness.
In that moment, she realized Jack still held her hand. Even more, his thumb caressed the back of her hand, making small circles. She tore her gaze from the couple turning even more flips in midair to look at the man beside her.
He watched her with a softened gaze that spoke of a tenderness beneath the surface. Could it be? Did he care for her more deeply than he betrayed? More, would she trust God and let go of her illusion of control? Trust the story He was telling and the path He had laid before her?
For there was truly no more secure place to be.
About the Author
But of all the love stories she knows, hers is her favorite. She lives happily with her own Prince Charming and their gaggle of minions. Three to be exact. They sure know how to distract a writer! But, alas, the stories must be written, even if it must happen in the wee hours of the morning.
